Why 8 1/2″ x 11″? Why is this the standard paper size?
June 4th, 2008So you asked!
I wondered the same thing last night as I tried to write a paper. Sitting there, with my writer’s block, I looked at my paper size and asked the question, why? WHY 8.5 x 11 inches?
So I googled it. And found the answer here: http://www.afandpa.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Pulp_and_Paper/Fun_Facts/The_U_S__Standard_Paper_Size.htm
Apparently, (forgive me if I mispell, but wordpress doesn’t have a spell checker that I know how to use!) the Dutch invented a two-sheet mold, and because most of the measurements were based on thumbs, fingers, arms, and heads, the 44 inch length came from the average Dutch vatman’s arm length. I haven’t tried this to verify, but I’m taking it from the above article. Very cool. So 44″ equals 4 11″ length sheets. I’m not clear on the 8.5″ part, but read the article in the above link and maybe you can help me. And WHAT is a Vatman? Is it the pre-cursor to Batman? Vatman! Vatman! and Vrobin.
What is REALLY interesting is that not until THE Ronald Reagan, in the 80’s, finally decided to proclaim 8.5″ x 11″ as the “official” size, we were all still in the blank. haha!
So “I brought down the wall, and made a statement on 8.5″ x 11″ paper. Thank you.”
Till next time,
Chris
