Why 8 1/2″ x 11″? Why is this the standard paper size?

June 4th, 2008

So you asked!
I wondered the same thing last night as I tried to write a paper. Sitting there, with my writer’s block, I looked at my paper size and asked the question, why? WHY 8.5 x 11 inches?
So I googled it. And found the answer here: http://www.afandpa.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Pulp_and_Paper/Fun_Facts/The_U_S__Standard_Paper_Size.htm

Apparently, (forgive me if I mispell, but wordpress doesn’t have a spell checker that I know how to use!) the Dutch invented a two-sheet mold, and because most of the measurements were based on thumbs, fingers, arms, and heads, the 44 inch length came from the average Dutch vatman’s arm length. I haven’t tried this to verify, but I’m taking it from the above article. Very cool. So 44″ equals 4 11″ length sheets. I’m not clear on the 8.5″ part, but read the article in the above link and maybe you can help me. And WHAT is a Vatman? Is it the pre-cursor to Batman? Vatman! Vatman! and Vrobin.

What is REALLY interesting is that not until THE Ronald Reagan, in the 80’s, finally decided to proclaim 8.5″ x 11″ as the “official” size, we were all still in the blank. haha!
So “I brought down the wall, and made a statement on 8.5″ x 11″ paper. Thank you.”

Till next time,
Chris

Vinyl Banners … “What should it say?”

May 24th, 2008

I KNOW there are a thousand places you can order signs and banners.

In fact, there are several franchises that do a great job getting you a sign or banner for a fair price in a quick turnaround.

BUT…

Did you know that you may be wasting money? Let me explain….

The message you portray on your sign or banner is THE MOST important part of the deal. So if you’re investing in a sign or banner, you may be interested in knowing that the wrong message may turn your investment into dust.

The wrong message on your sign or banner will not get you results. In fact, the right message can produce a return far exceeding your expectations.

Just something to think about, but if you’d like some help, give us a call today at: toll free: 866-267-5814 , or go to www.letsgobanners.com

Organic placement in Google, FREE search engine traffic

May 11th, 2008

Hi this is Chris Anderson with today’s LGB Marketing Tip brought to you from 69 beach on the beautiful island of Hawaii (the Big Island!) as you can see nice beautiful blue aqua waters with a lot of tourist as well as locals enjoying the water and sandy beaches.

But back to business. Today we’re going to actually be talking about how organic search engine result placements work. And there are two main factors that determine your placement in search engines such as Google and Yahoo.

One is “on page content” which are in essence what your web pages and web site are all about. Content meaning text, video, audio, pictures, and anything that adds value for the visitor when they arrive at your site.

The other thing that determines your ranking are the inbound links to your site from other websites and what those other websites say about you (your site.) And this is usually the most misunderstood part about search engine optimization. A lot of people think that if they have a website and they put 20 links on their site to other sites that that will benefit them in the search engines.

While this may add value to your site by providing a lot of resources, it won’t do anything as far as pushing you up in the search engines. Um, the thing that matters is that you’re getting links from other sites that are saying relevant things about your keywords.

So just kind of keep that in mind but we strive to do with our clients is to help them build good informative content that adds value for the visitor and to also attract a lot of links from other sites that say good things about our sites.

So for today’s LGB Marketing Tip, from www.letsgobanners.com

What the heck is a blog? How do I write one?

May 11th, 2008

Hi, this is Chris Anderson (for Jenny Lee and Marnie Young) from beautiful 69 Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii.

This week, we’ve been discussing all things SEO, and we’re talking about kissing alot of blogs today.

It’s a beautiful day at the beach, and the tourists and locals are really enjoying the aqua water and nice breeze. I have to be honest, this is one of the nicest days I’ve seen on 69, but we MUST stay focused and talk about blogs.

What did Spock find in the toilet? The Captain’s Blog.
OK, bad jokes aside, WHAT is a blog? And how and why would you want to write one?

A blog is a “web log,” which is kind of like a journal that you or someone writes, but the cool thing is that others can read your blog and post comments to your blog or article.

This creates a dialogue, and pretty soon, if you have good content, you have bung load of followers joining in on your topic.

Say you LOVE Old English Mastifs. You could create a Blog and post stories about your dog(s) and how you purchased them, trained them, raised them, cared for them, and finally disposed of them (like I had to deal with our wonderful English Mastif.) Don’t forget, they’re about 180 pounds, so when they kick (and they do,) it’s like trying to figure out what to do with a relative. We had our wonderful dog creamated, and maybe I should start a blog on that topic- it wasn’t pretty!

Anyway, if your company or you don’t have a blog or have never posted to one, you should. It’s an awesome experience, and you can meet a lot of contacts and maybe even do some business.

Just be careful! If your intent is to get back links or to spam for quick sales, you’ll likely get your head removed and handed back to you on a poopy tray.

If you’d like to add a blog to your site, check out www.wordpress.com for a FREE blog program that has a kabillion add-ons. And Sherman Hu offers a word press tutorial that will teach you everthing you want to know. (www.wordpresstutorials.com)

Until next time, on 69 Beach, (I must go catch some waves!)
